Supplementary grant
If your parents are unable to contribute much to your education, you can get a supplementary grant. The amount of the supplementary grant depends on your parents' income. We also take into account the number of children they are supporting and whether your parents are repaying a student loan themselves.
The supplementary grant is a gift if you are in MBO level 1 (‘entrée-opleiding’) or 2. For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO, and university programmes, the supplementary grant is a ‘performance grant’. This means the supplementary grant becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years. If you do not obtain your diploma within 10 years, you will need to repay the full amount, plus interest.
There is an exception to this: the first 12 months of supplementary grant you receive for MBO levels 3 or 4 and the first 5 months for HBO or university do not have to be repaid.
