Supporting documents

It depends on your situation which supporting documents are required.

Supporting documents for a new application

Are you not yet receiving student finance? Read more about which supporting documents you need to upload below.

You have been living in the Netherlands for 5 or more consecutive years

Upload a copy of your ID. If you are a British national, also upload a copy of the front and back of your Dutch Article 50 TEU residence document.

You, your partner or your parent works in the Netherlands

Supporting documents in the event of a permanent or temporary contract or an on-call contract

  • employment contract, signed by both parties
  • latest payslip and a copy of the associated bank statement
  • in the event of fewer than 32 hours of work per month: payslips with the associated bank statements from the last 6 months, to the extent that work was performed in the Netherlands during that timeframe
  • for UK nationals: a copy of the front and back of your Dutch Article 50 TEU residence document
  • in the event of an agency contract: confirmation of placement.

Supporting documents for freelancers or self-employed workers

  • ‘VAT identification number’ letter
  • your Chamber of Commerce registration number
  • KOR small business scheme decision of the Tax Administration, if you applied for one.

Supporting documents for extension

Was your student finance granted for a fixed term, and would you like to apply for an extension? Read more below about which supporting documents you need to upload.

Work with a contract

Is your work in the Netherlands temporary or are you an on-call worker? Or does this apply to your partner or your parent? Then you need to upload the following supporting documents:

  • payslips for the last 6 months, showing how many hours of work was performed per month
  • bank statements for the last 6 months, only showing the wages paid
  • employment contract/contracts for the last 6 months, signed by both parties
  • in the event of an agency contract: confirmation of placement.

Freelancer or self-employed worker

Are you a freelancer or self-employed worker, or is your parent or partner? Then you need to upload the following supporting documents:

  • turnover tax return filed with the Tax Administration for the quarters in which you received student finance
  • complete accounting records (bank statements, any and all proof of purchase)
  • all invoices to customers (bank statements or receipts). Only paid hours count towards the standard of 32 hours
  • purchase/sales cash book in the event of cash flows
  • monthly or weekly timesheets.

Internship or student exchange

Internship

If you are doing a compulsory internship, you must comply with one of the following 2 conditions:

  • In the month prior to your internship, you worked at least 32 hours and received student finance. Or
  • In the 6 months prior to commencement of the internship, you worked at least 24 hours a month and received student finance.

If you meet these conditions, you should upload an internship agreement signed by you and the internship company plus a declaration from your educational institution which states:

  • that you will continue to be enrolled at the educational institution for the duration of the internship
  • that the internship is a compulsory component of the study programme or that you will receive study credits for it
  • the precise period of the internship
  • the name of the internship company.

Student exchange

If you are planning to go on a student exchange abroad, you must comply with one of the following 2 conditions:

  • In the month prior to your student exchange, you worked at least 32 hours and received student finance. Or
  • In the 6 months prior to commencement of the student exchange, you worked at least 24 hours a month and received student finance.

If you meet these conditions, you should upload proof of enrolment at a foreign educational institution and a declaration from your Dutch educational institution which states:

  • that the exchange programme is a compulsory part of the study programme
  • the precise period of the student exchange.
